Our 3 FIRST Tech Challenge(FTC) competed with 24 other teams in the KC East League tournament at Staley High School on Saturday, January 27th to see which 5 teams would advance to State. Advancement happens through either being on the Winning Alliance or earning an appropriate level judged award. It is a very long day running from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Teams must submit an Engineering Notebook showing their engineering journey building the robot, community interactions, and team composition and sustainability plans. Each team gives a presentation to judge panels and answer questions, has interviews with judges in their pits, and competes with their robots. The robot competition starts out with 6 matches in randomly assigned alliances and then the top 4 seeded teams each select two alliance partners to compete in finals and determine the Winning Alliance. Judged awards are presented at the end of the day and advancement to State is announced. FTC Team 18463, Team Rocinante and FTC Team 18464, Team Serenity gave valiant efforts but did not receive any judged awards or advance to finals. Team Serenity, whose major contributors were George Dietz and Mack Young really deserve recognition for their exceptional efforts to constantly evolve their robot build, including building additional capabilities rapidly at the competitions. Brayden Sederburg was the driver on Team Rocinante and did a superior job scoring game pieces. FTC Team 9849, The Small Fries, our original after school team did exceptionally well. The team was selected to compete in Finals on the number 4 alliance. Their alliance did not go past semifinals, but they put up a valiant effort. The team earned the Engineering Design Award for their robot design as well as being 2nd Runner Up for the Inspire Award, the highest honor a team can earn at competition and the award that advanced them to State. Mariah Penniman, Scott Swainston, Grant Fitterer, Charles Harris, and Julian Strickland were the main contributors on this team. We are so proud of all our teams, we keep evolving and building better robots each year! The State Tournament is Saturday, March 2nd at Missouri S&T in Rolla. Please congratulate our team members and keep us in your positive thoughts. The attached Small Fries' Engineering Portfolio helped them earn the awards they received.
